Hey guys I’m in the Fort Lauderdale area now new to the area and I was wondering if anyone knew where to buy steel for knives around here
I’m in the middle of MN and I have troubles with some steels. I usually order specialty steels online, either from McMaster-Carr or Admiral Steel/NJ Steel Baron.
That’s if I need things like 4140, 5160, O1, W1, 1075, 1095, etc. For mild steel stuff (1018) I usually can get that from the local steel store.
If you don’t have a local steel store, sometimes Craig’s List can fetch you some nice things you can piece apart and use the metal from. A car junkyard has plenty of steel springs you can use, although it’s mystery steel, you can harden it and use it.
Surprisingly, Amazon has some things too, but it comes at a premium.
If you’re looking for things to just heat and beat, I’d suggest hitting up junk yards or scrap recycling places, you can often get a bunch of steel from those places.
