New to the trade

Hello I am new to the art of blacksmithing I have a home built coal forge and an old rail road rail for an anvil IV made a few railroad spike knives for decorative displays but mainly to get the feel of working the steel. But I wanna know if older tool steel would work to make good useable knives that will keep an edge I’m not one to go and buy new material untill I get better when I have a bunch of scrap laying around. Any info given to this beginner will be much appreciated…
