Hi Can anybody tell me if I can use a small piece of glass built into the door of a forge for viewing?,maybe a piece of door glass from a cooker or wood burner.
Hello again,
Odds are if you add a glass viewing window the soot created from the fire can form on the inside of the forge, not to mention when you’re working with high forging temperatures the glass won’t last very long. I’m no expert, but I think your best bet would be to just constantly pull whatever your working on out to see where it is heat-wise.*Assuming that the purpose of the window is so you can check the coloring of the metal you’re forging
Thanks Owen It was just a thought.
I wondered why nobody seemed to be doin it.
Anytime! Glad I could help.
Mica is the only translucent material I know of that can stand those extreme temperatures. Its a mineral by-the-way.
And you would be better off not buying mica and just looking through a small window that doesn’t let much heat out. Have a good day!
